Calacatta vs. Carrara Marble

The use of marble in interior design has a long history, dating back as far as Ancient Rome. Marble has been used over the centuries to embellish everything from iconic architectural structures to modern day kitchens and bathrooms.

1

Marble is a luxurious choice and is often more expensive than other solid surfaces, but is worth the investment since it’s unquestionably elegant and forever timeless. There are two varieties of Italian marble that are similar in appearance, both milky white with gray veining, and they are Carrara and Calacatta. Carrara has more delicate, lighter veining; Calacatta is a rarer, pricier stone and has bolder more defined strokes, yet both are a desirable luxury stone.

2

Calacatta marble appears on the walls in this bathroom, adding drama and one-of-a-kind pattern. One thing is true about slab marble, it doesn’t need embellishment of any kind. Marble has earned its beauty and is best left with its stunning and unique veining on display.

3

One of the most popular ways to add marble to the bathroom is with slab countertops. Mix it up with tile or wallpaper in the same gray and white palette to bring additional pattern to your bathroom space.

Kitchen Countertops from Carrara Marble

When it comes to selecting kitchen countertops, classic white marble remains the top choice for many homeowners. It’s a natural material with great variety, depending on which variety you select and how it’s cut. It creates a really lovely natural pattern, which you don’t get with a lot of artificial materials.

ss1

Although many people automatically think of creamy white stone when they think of marble, there are hundreds of varieties. And also you just don’t get that color and kind of viening in any other type of natural stone.

ss4

For kitchen countertops, however, we generally recommend sticking with white. Because acid etching leaves a whitish mark, it is much more noticeable on colored marble than on white marble. But on the other hand it’s a personal choice.

a2

When it comes to selecting slabs, every stone slab is slightly different, so it’s ideal to select the exact pieces of stone that will be used for your countertops. In the case of marble every quarry is different, but it’s possible to cut the same marble blocks two different ways to achieve unique veining patterns.

The most popular finish choices remain polished, which looks glossy, or honed, which appears matte. But for homeowners concerned about acid etching we recommend a honed finish. On a polished finish, etching is going to turn it dull and be more visible but with honed, you’re dulling an already dull finish, so it disguises it.

The marble from Carrara was used for some of the most remarkable buildings in Ancient Rome, such as the Pantheon and Trajan’s Column in Rome. As well as many sculptures of the Renaissance, such as Michelangelo’s David (1501–04), were carved from Carrara marble. For Michelangelo at least, Carrara marble was valued above all other stone, except perhaps that of his own quarry in Pietrasanta.

What does the future hold for Carrara marble?
